We have developed a method to thaw frozen blocks (-30C) of biological material in a horizontal mixer. The material is shear and thermal sensitive so horizontal mixing allows us to drive the blocks under the liquid level with little effort, our old veritcal system was like ice tea with the blocks floating on top and took too long to thaw. Since we do not want the material to see temps above 5C, our jacket is at 20C, we would like to model the mixing and temperature gradients to understand potential hot spots for scale-up. This is a new concept for the manufacturer, the system was designed to mix powders so they cannot help. Any thoughts on a simulation tool that can handle mixing, phase change, and sloushing or someone doing research in this area that can help? Thanks in advance.
