Siphonic Roof Drainage in the US?

Hello Eng-Tips Community,

I wanted to lend my expertise to Eng-Tips.com. One of the categories I specialize in is 'Siphonic Roof Drainage', I am published in the ASPE Design Handbook V2 for helping with the siphonic drainage section.

I've reviewed previous posts and see siphonic drainage is really not discussed on this forum. I see comment from one post it is used in the UK, but really it hasn't seem to taken hold in the US yet.

My question, HOW MANY ENGINEERS ON HERE FROM THE US HAVE DESIGNED A SIPHONIC PROJECT? HOW MANY HAVE INTSTALLED THE SYSTEM?

If there is a good response/conversation to this post, I will post another engaging question next week on siphonic drainage such as the most common misconception: "A siphonic system requires more ponding on the roof than traditional gravity drainage would." <--FALSE!

Looking forward to the educational discussion!

Brennan,

Welcome to E-T.

One difficulty is knowing which forum is the best. For your post this one isn't it I'm afraid.

I would try deleting the post above (you're not allowed to double post) and open a new on in "civil/environmental general" or "water treatment and distribution". That's where roof drainage people might hang out, but not in pipelines and piping systems which is predominantly hydrocarbons. Or do search ( inthe top right corner) for symphonic drainage or drainage and see which forums come up more than others.

It might help a little for the uninitiated if you actually described what a symphonic system actually is with a few diagrams or links. I've got an idea but can't see why a simple gutter and downpipe don't work just as well.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

It doesn't waste pipe volume carrying water and air, so pipe sizes are smaller with the resulting single phase flow. Sounds kool enough, but not my industry sector.

Siphonic roof drainage is not a civil/environmental or a water treatment issue. Siphonic roof drainage is a building drainage issue. Don't think there is a proper forum for it. Engineering firms that design buildings have mechanical or plumbing engineers that design these drainage systems.

Yeah, we used to have a plumbing engineering forum, but the authorities decided there was not enough action there (how they gauged that - I do not know).

Try the HVAC forum. That is more likely where the "mostly" knowledgeable personnel dwell.

Hi all,

Would this fit into the same stable as gravity draining lines?

Hi 1503-44,

Many thanks for the feedback.

Did the calc's for gravity drain line. 2.6km long 300mm NB with a drop of ~14m. Some tricky issue's to overcome there. Did the "acid test". Installed and commissioned without incident.

Congratulations. Gravity isn't always as reliable as Newton thought.
