Hello,
Where can I find any thrumbrule for determine the sizing (specifically the cross section area) of a concentric collector in a pump with a diffuser?
Thanks!

"Pump Handbook" by Karassik et al., the information provided aligns primarily with the following chapters and sections:
  • Chapter 3: Centrifugal Pump Theory and Practice:
    • Covers fundamental hydraulic design, including diffuser and collector design principles. It discusses velocity recovery, flow transitions, and energy conservation in pump components.
  • Chapter 8: Pump Hydraulics and Selection:
    • Focuses on practical considerations for sizing collectors, transitions, and optimizing flow paths to minimize losses and ensure smooth operation.
  • Chapter 9: Design of Pump Components:
    • Contains specific guidance on diffuser and volute sizing, including relationships between velocity, area, and flow recovery. This section discusses collector dimensions and their impact on pressure recovery and efficiency.
  • Appendices and Design Tables:
    • Provides velocity recommendations and standard thumb rules used in pump designs for various applications.

Which edition are you refering to? I am having book by Karassik, Messina, Cooper and Heald, 3rd edn..by the same name,,it doesnot have these chapters

What do you mean by concentric collector, are you referring to an inlet or outlet reducer piece?

I meant the space after the diffuser and before the casing of the pump. This is marked by a red arrow in the attached file.
