Is there a way to create a label in a sketch? i would like to point to a curve and say "this curve is for the upper surface".

After finishing your Sketch, enter Drafting, create and attach your label to the Sketch curve(s) of interest. Now return to Modeling and when you open the Sketch to edit, the note will still be there. And if you move the referenced Sketch curves, the Label will update, just like it would have if a referenced object had moved in a Drawing.

Of course, if you have the PMI module, you can do this right inside of Modeling by just adding a PMI Note to your already completed Sketch.

What is the PMI module and does it allow the addition of notes inside the sketch or are they attached as additional objects. I would like the ability to more thoroughly document my sketches, which can be very complicated.

PMI stands for Product Manufacturing Information, it allows you to directly annotate the 3D model with dimensions and GD&T in theory it removes the need for there to be drawing as all the geometric information is stored in the 3D model, you can also add notese etc. However, in our case even though we are global company, the need for CAD drawings will always exist as we still use Fred in a shed to make some of our smaller components and having the hardware (and know how) to work with 3D geometry is a little advanced for some of our smaller suppliers.

Life shouldn't be measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of times when it's taken away...

It would be really nice to be able to add notes to the sketches as you are doing the work, and so that anyone opening the sketch would immediately be faced with the documentation. If I have to exit the sketch change, my coordinate orientation (so the text is facing the right direction) switch to drafting, then create the label, I will most likely put it off until I forget.

Does this sound like a good ER?

John, do you ever originate ERs from what you read here?

The preferred approach is to use the PMI note/label function, which while you must still leave the Sketch Task (although that will be changing in NX 7.5 as we are going to be offering an alternative approach to creating and editing your sketches, which will NOT require a separate 'task environment' which means that functions like PMI will be available while you're actually sketching), you at least do not need to launch Drafting, and besides, with PMI there are built-in controls for exactly where the note/label is placed relative to the sketch plane.

John,
Will the PMI functionality you're describing be included in the Mach 1 Design or Mach Advantage bundles?

The PMI Module is included in all Mach bundles starting with Mach 2 and above excluding the following bundles:

NX12500 - NX MACH 2 Advanced FEM
NX13500 - NX MACH 3 NX Advanced Simulation
NX12430 - NX MACH 2 - Mill-Turn Machining

It can also be purchased as an add-on module.
