Does anyone have any data on sling load instabilities. Flight test data would be load / vehicle / airspeed information and possibly a description of the load motion, and if the test was instrumented there could be time histories of controls and hook loads. Wind tunnel data would be load shape/weight, airspeed, frequency, etc.

I'd like to correlate a sling load stability model against measured data.

The UK military have a specialist unit who's role is to evaluate and document the behavior and peculiarities of generic netted / palleted and individually evaluated helicopter USLs. They are responsible for Air Publication 1105, the "bible" for UK military helicopter crews flying USLs.

I think the unit is now called JATEU (Joint Air Transport Evaluation Unit); although it was called something else when I flew loads for them under a Puma in the late 1970s. I think it's still based at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. They might be able to give some general advice for your consideration.

Just checked, they have a webpage with full contact details, just typed in the name of the unit to get it to the top of the google search engine list.
