Small Electric Motor load testing, Dynamometers 1

Looking for a Dynamometer to perform load testing on electric motors (10-100 IN-LBS). Buget is limited!
Any potential sources or Idea's would be appreciated.

I have a quote from Magtrol. It starts at 10,476.00 not including any control related equipment. It's more then I can spend by about 50%. Thanks for the tip though Bob!
 
A brush type servo motor makes an inexpensive electrical load. Build a cradel with bearings so the stator can rotate around the shaft centerline. Attach a torque arm to the stator and connect the outboard end of the torque arm to a scale. Drive the motor with current from a current mode servo amplifier (voltage in gives current out). Connect the shaft of the motor to be tested to the shaft of the "Motor Dynomometer." The current creates a torque independent of the speed iof the driving motor and the scale x torque arm length = The Torque in Force x Length.
 
We have used one of our own servo motors/Card cages in the past (Once) to conduct motor over load testing using clamps on plywood and monitering current etc. This would be an option but we were hoping to find a solution that would take less time to set up and be of a more perminent nature. I don't have alot of time to invest in building a fixture these days. We no longer have a machine shop although we could out source it if neccessary. It may come to this but it would easier for us if we could find an option that would involve less contruction. Thanks for the feedback!
 
If you need to check motor's SOAC (Safe Operating Area Curve) only, you may use the technique suggested by Welch R. (welch022@umn.edu) that allows you to measure SOAC without using expensive electro-mechanical device called a "dynamometer".
 
The primary testing would be incremental motor over load tests per UL requirements. Thanks!
