I am doing a trade study for small (~10kW) Diesel Engines; here are a list of the companies I have looked at:

Hatz
Lombardini
Izuzu
Kohler
Yanmar
Briggs and Stratton
Wisconsin Motors
Zenith
Caterpillar
Subaru
Cummins
Kubota
Perkins

There are also some non standard UAV engines that I’ve looked at, but cannot find one that is production worthy

This will be going in a small hybrid electric vehicle, so I’m also looking into a powerpack option (Lombardini has something close, but am not sure if I can get it)

Any ideas?

Thanks for the input so far:

-The Engines/generators from Westerbeke look great but weigh about twice what I need. ( will keep them in mind for other projects)

-Thanks for the link, from what I've looked at the engines from Centurion and Deltahawk, are much larger than I need

-I didn't at the time find any Deutz engines under 20kw, but I'll go check on their sizes again

I'm trying to find something more along the lines of these (but ones I can actually buy, these are still under developement from what I can tell):
L3-COM makes a 10hp, 10lb UAV engine model# opoc-s30 (sorry couldn't find url)
SCHRICK makes a 46 HP 53 lb Engine model# Hurricane DID 600
Then there is this one from RCV Engines

Light weight.

High power.

Long life.

Pick two.

I was actually a big fan of the Robin engine (the DY35 was my top choice until I worked in all my power consumption and realized I needed more power).

as for the lightweight/high power/long life comment ... you forgot one ... fuel efficiency. I'm just fishing to see if someone has some magic before I finalize my engine selection.

Thus far my prime candidate is the Caterpillar C0.5, its about 20mm taller than I would like, but I'm hoping I can make some mods to it, and maybe regain that.

Thanks

Yanmar TF160E is a good hybrid choice. I judged a hybrid competition 12 yrs ago and one of the team members built a diesel multimode hybrid on his own with a similar unit for a dodge neon. They needed more like 25Kw just to sustain uphill grades.. 10hp.. is this a scooter or an apu?

Turbomotor,

I have seen the OPOC (and tried to buy one), but they wouldn't sell it to me. If you can hook me up with one of Dr. Peter Hofbauer OPOC engines I would be more than happy to cut a check.

Thanks

I've spoken with him on the phone. He was at his office at FEV in Michigan. Other than that, I have never met the man.

Small, lightweight diesel engine......

Isn't that an oxymoron?[2thumbsup]

I know Orbital Technologies has done some work converting gasoline engines to heavy fuel with their direct injection systems.

How do you define "production worthy"?
