Small Sized pressure vessel 3

Where would I find ASME, or other, regulations concerning a "small sized pressure vessel". A quick search on the ASME site did not return any results.

Specifically, it is a stainless steel autoclave, 300mm dia x 710mm deep, with a maximum allowable pressure of 0.255 MPa and temperature range of 105-135 deg C. It has an electric heating element inside and is used to create steam for sterilizing items placed inside.

At roughly 12" diameter and at a pressure of roughly 35 psi this would fall into the scope of ASME VIII, and Div. 1 is the most likely division to be used for the design.

Using ASME VIII-1 would be generally recognized and accepted engineering practice and will be either required or acceptable in most jurisdictions in the USA. However, check with the jurisdiction where it will be installed to see what the requirements are for that location.

That would be the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII. This will run you several hundred dollars to buy.

It might help to know what you are needing. The B&PV Code addresses design rules for construction, but doesn't necessarily give operational rules or safety rules or things like that. And it is about vessels in general, not autoclaves specifically.

You might also look into OSHA rules, if any, concerning the equipment in question.

The autoclave you mentioned is quite a complex thing, due to the quick opening closure, typically taking up the full diameter. The vessel design is more likely a proprietary design for the fabricator of your autoclave and the design is most likely registered also. Depending what are your intentions, fabricating or selling autoclaves, the least of your problems is the design of the shell to the ASME VIII or any pressure vessel code;- you have to fabricate or use a proven closure for your little sterilizer, otherways you won't be able to use it legally. Also, you realy should look up first in the OSHA regulations for the use of those autoclaves.
