I recently stumbled on Smart Polymers while researching Memory Metals. My application would be better suited to use Smart Polymers, but there is very little information on the web. In particular, I can't find any manufactures or suppliers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

There are plenty of smart polymers. What kind of response are you looking for?

The application is for a material that will react at approximately 100 F. It needs to be manufactured into rod, approximately 1/8" diameter x 10" long. It could be manufactured as a cord and then cut to length.

Thanks,

Will react how to what.

If you can't ask a properly defined question we can't help.

I did think I had missed something...

Harry, that makes three out of three of us. I think there is something missing.

As far as I could understand (but I'm not sure is what he wants) mselak500 wants a smart polymer with shape memory like the metal alloys. (ex. Nitinol)

I didn't knew about this property in polymers, but now I'm curious, searching it soon.

X linkable PE will do that. I think the source is Solvay.

You can heat the part gently with a flame, form it buy hand, then drop it into water to retain the new shape, then heat gently again and it springs back to the original shape.

Also, I have never heard the term smart polymer used to describe that type of polymeror process.

I just found two produts that are "Shape Memory Polymers":

Veriflex®

Tembo®

Smart materials have at least one propertie that can be changed by external stimulation (stress, temperature, moisture, pH, electric or magnetic fields). So you can consider a SMP a smart polymer, but it's a very vague term.

Thank you for your help.

Sorry if my messages were confusing, but you answered my question. You are correct, I should have used the phase "shape polymer" instead of "smart polymer".

Thanks again for everyone's help.
