Hello all,

I am new to this forum and have a quick question regarding column splicing for a SMF.

The contractor has provided a detail in which a column splice is required due to the column being too short.
The existing column height is such that the W14x beam would sit on top of the column. Therefore, they need to add a 14" tall section of column in order to achieve the flush connection requirement. They are calling out a full pen weld. I cannot find any limitations with creating a column splice at the col-beam connection with regards to a full pen weld. I am aware that if a fillet weld is used, the splice must be minimum 4 ft from the connection.

Any guidance on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

This might not answer your question directly, but you should probably read sections 8.4a and 9.9 of AISC 341-05 Seismic Provisions for column splice requirements. The welds are demand critical, so check out section 7.3b as well.
