Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced software package for designing precast bridge girders? Our office does a few bridges each year but not enough to justify an expensive program. I would prefer one where non standard loadings can be used.

Our bridge group uses Leap Software

I have used PS3 for prestressed precast girder bridge. This programm is by PennDOT. I bought it for 500 $ in 2002. It is worth it for the price. I mean it not colorfull but it get me what I want.

I have my personal software which I did with someone when I was doing graduate studies at ivy league school. If you give me your email, I can send it to you, Free.

I'd be interested in seeing the free software you have. Please send it to the following address:

I'm wrestling with PS3 right now. I wouldn't recommend it, unless, of course, it's required by your DOT. Least user friendly program I've ever seen. The user instructions are cryptic. It is very difficult to work with non PENNDOT shapes. The design parameters default to PENNDOT standards, which modify AASHTO in dozens of ways, and are documented in a 1300 page design manual.

I agree with you. I have also used and love to use windows based s/w's like STAAD. But the tech support of STAAD is "very" professional so I had problems in dealing with them. But when I used to talk to PennDOT support, they will spend whole day with me, If I want to. They will teach me engineering from a b c if I want to. In 2002 when I was using it, Guy name was Hansmukh Lathia, who was I guess author of PS3 and also for tech support. I not only learnt how to use PS3 but also a lot more. So look in it this way, to get rid of frustration and get into success.
