Hi guys,

I am interested to learn about the soil properties. I was wondering what are the typical parameters of made ground layer .e.g angel of friction , poisson ratio, edometric Modulus MPa, where do I find them in site investigation report? Are they correlated to SPT KN/m2?

Also, what is the different between Dark and yellow brown Sand soil properties?

PS I am not Geo Engineer, just interested to learn.

Thanks

Moonknight....that's a tall order! I would suggest that you obtain several of the classic geotechnical textbooks by Bowles, Lamb and Whitman, Terzaghi and Peck, Sowers and then look as the more recent texts by Das and Coduto. Even a cursory review of these texts will give you a reasonable understanding of soil properties, their correlations and applications. In addition, you'll have a very good reference library of geotechnical texts.

Is there any software would help to work out these parameters? I am just reading some site investigation reports , I noted that most of them don't provide much information except the Standard penetration test. What parameters are correlated to SPT, I know in case of Clay soil would be able to get Cu by knowing the SPT. However, sand soil are by nature is cohesionless but not sure what parameters can I get by knowing SPT. I will go through these reference you provided later but if you could give me conservative parameters for cohesionless soil.

Thank you

For natural deposits of cohesion less soils the spt is correlated to a friction angle.

The texts listed above are very useful to understand soil mechanics. Bowles is probably the most practical. Another good overall text to consider is the canadian foundation engineering manual.

For correlations of soil properties look up the 'manual on estimating soil properties for foundation design'.

Not all soil reports give you those numbers. It takes different kinds of lab tests to get those numbers. One usually does not get them unless there is a special case the investigation was done for. And those tests cost plenty, not usually in the investigation budget.

Get a hold of the "Hand Book of Geotechnical Investigation and Design Tables" by Burt Look. It gives loads of standard correlations for soil properties. You should be able to find the PDF online.

Thank you guys for providing all these references it is really helpful!

The only thing which I’m not sure about is the made ground properties? What angel friction is assumed for the top soil? For example one of the report I have read today stating that 1 meter Deep of made ground Of concrete! Do you take the density as 24KN/m3? What the angel of friction? Or it is just none?

Compacted granular fill has a correlation between Proctor's density and relative density. Relative density to friction angle correlations exist.

What angel friction is assumed for the top soil?

Top soil is stripped if it is a thin layer. Thicker deposits are characterized as peat, testing is typically done by field vane to determine a cohesion, these are very low values.

The density is usually assumed as 24 kn/m3 and shear strength is taken as rule of thumb half of the compressive strength.

Along with the Burt Look book, 'Soil Properties and their Correlations' and 'Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering'. I particularly like the latter because for many correlations the book also provides standard deviations
