Solid From .stp Import Not Shading Completely...

I have imported a .stp (STEP) file provided by a supplier and it seems to have come in as it should. When I shade the model some of the faces are transparent. I can select the model by choosing on the transparent face so there is something there.

I have tried to change the object display, but none of my usual techniques seem to change the appearance.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

I forgot to mention I am running NX7.5 on a 64 bit workstation.

it's a long shot.... but have you done a "fit" ?
if it's a large model, sometimes some of it looks chopped off when you first import

Thanks moog2 for the advice, but I had already done that.

The part is a case with several molded features. Many of the faces stay transparent even though they are selectable. No matter what I do with the object display they remain transparent. I need this part to be displayed properly for a presentation.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Are you using Perspective display? If so, go to the Camera function and 'reset' the Clipping Planes, then perform the 'Fit' operation.

Is partial shading activated?
I wouldn't assume so with an imported step file, but worth looking at.

Partial shading is not on "Apply to All Faces of Selected Body" is checked on during "Edit Object Display" change.

I am not using Perspective Display, just the normal views.

To descibe what is happening picture looking into a shoebox, without the lid, from the top. The sides are there and displayed, but the bottom is see thru. While looking down into the shoebox from the top the solid model can be selected by selecting on the see thru face portion of the model.

No matter what I attempt to do the bottom 2 faces remain see thru when the model is shaded.

Although my case model is more complicated than a shoebox, there are several other faces that are see thru also, but allow selection if chosen.

Is the 'backface culling' option on, or '2 sided light' option off?

Also, I would perform a geometry check to make sure the model is OK.

The .stp translation did report several face problems and geometry check does show the solid model has problems. I just thought it strange that I can select a see thru face on a solid model as if the face was there.

I am currently checking with the supplier to see if different form of the 3D data can be provided like a Parasolid file.

Have you tried saving it out as a parasolid yourself?

Yes, I have Exported Parasolid and it came back in exactly the same with the see thru faces.

I also have this occure with .x_t files. usually the body does not form a complete solid. i get aruond the issue by setting the translucensy to a very low amount say 1-2 %. the back of the surfaces usually will show at this point. Not perfect but effective work around.

If the solid has geometry problems, don't send it downstream (CAM, FEA, etc) until it has been fixed. You may even notice some strange behavior in the drafting application. Best if you can get a clean model from the supplier. If you need it right away, you might use synchronous commands to fix it yourself.

Changing the translucency does not seem to affect it.

I have requested another form of 3D data from the supplier like a Parasolid, will see what happens.

The component supplier was able to provide Parasolid (.x_t) files that translated in perfectly so this issue is now remedied.

Thanks for everyones input.
