Solidworks & Cosmosworks 2004 versions

Hi there,
I'm having some problems with Cosmosworks 2004 integrated in Solidworks 2004.

When i try to perform a FEA on an assembly or even a single part (rectangular extrusion) the part / assembly 'meshing' stops and the program (both Solidworks and the Cossmoss ad-in) fail to respond further..... only way to proceed is taskmanager, end-taks, all data lost.

Is anyone familair with this BUG?

You may have to wait longer. Turn Hyperthreading off if equipped, Check to see the processor usage if its really high (50%>) then likely the mexher is still running, just that nothing else updates. What sort of notice are you getting that the mesher has stopped?

i'm not getting any message / notice at all......

What i just tried again is to extrude a part (round bar) define the material, create a study (static, solid mesh), define restraints and load.

Next step is to create a mesh, high quality, standart type, jacobian check=4, else no other things selected. I select run analysis after meshing.... press "OK" and sit tight....

From this point SW is not responding anymore, and there is no processor activity at all (99% system idle).

I'm using a AMD2100,XP, 512KB, and have 10GB drivespace avaialble.... should be ok no?

Any ideas?

BTW, Not sure where to (de)activate the hypertrading option, and in the taskmanager there is no program "mexher" or "mesher" (incase of typo ;-) as well....

maybe some more info...

during mesh create i get a window with
- Evaluating geo.... checked
- Processing boundary... checked
- creating mesh..... not responding ;-(

Try to create the mesh with the default settings of Cosmos on that simple extruded rectangle. The mesh should be created fast.

If not, you have problems and I don't think it's bug. SW and AMD processors never worked well together.

There's an SW version (I think it's sw2003 - don't know if it's the same for sw2004)that work with AMD only with XP Pro.

Try to solve the problem with your VAR help.

There are other things that can be messing with your installation (in that case, the solution will be reinstal SW and Cosmos): did you disabled the anti-virus brfore SW and Cosmos install? Did you install/uninstall software after SW and Cosmos install? Are the temp, backup and working files pointing to the right folders?....

I havent run into any bugs yet in Cosmos 04, and this is about the first obe Ive heard. probably why Cosmsos SP1 is only a few megs :/

You dont have to worry about Hyperthreading (should be HYPE-rthreading) its a feature of new P4 processors.

Hmm.. even a simple cube wont mesh...

Is the software locking? then the following wont help and I'll bow out..

From the COSMOS training manual.

"If the mesh fails after two check marks have appeared, it is failing the volume filling stage.

Reduce tolerance to 1% of element size.

If it still fails then reduce element size by 25% and Tolerance at 1%"

Previously tried to mesh using the default settings... same pb ;-( Will try to dig-out if the VAR-help can suggest some option (although i'm not sure yet were to find this....).
Other options, such a virus-progs or program installation, are out of the question. I'm using a clean XP-pro installation without a virus-application.

I'm not sure if SW 'responding failures' can be concidered as failing of the volume filling stage..... but this possible solution (from the manual) sound like to most constructive one so far.

Will experiment with both options tonight!

Have you tried to see if you get the same error with ComosXpress? If it works in one and not the other, that might be a clue to some other issue you might have.

For what it is worth I highly doubt that your AMD processor has any bearing on your problem. There were problems in the past with SW99(?) and the AMD processors of the day but those were addressed by SW. No special installation is required any longer. We ran some fairly sophisticated CosmosWorks analyses on workstations equipped with AMD Athlons at my previous employer and never experienced any problems whatsoever.

I'm uncertain if it's of much consequence to your situation but just another voice in the crowd heard from.

SW recommends you turn Hyperthreading off to speed up performance. You have to turn that off under your Bios. I can't tell you excatly how to do it because all Bios are different.

The AMD that is being discussed was with the K6 chips of AMD. There are no other known issues.

I have heard of people having more trouble in general with HP machines more than others.
