I am having a performance issue with Solidworks 2001 patched to the latest and storeing files on a Novell Netware 5.1 (Sp3) Server.... When I try to access a drawing from the Server it takes about 3 to 5 minutes to open and if I open the same file from the local Disk drive (C:) it takes about 10 to 18 seconds..... this only happens in
Solidworks.... I can not find a answer anywhere....

Thanks;

I only open files locally, because a network, especially Novell (in my opinion) is slow to open files. Always, if possible copy files to your local harddrive and work on them there. Then when complete, copy & paste them back to the server. Once they are over, delete the ones on your local drive. This is a safety measure to assure that if the network goes down or anything happens, when copying them you will still have them on your local drive. I did it like this for many years.

There isn't a lot that can be done, because usually it's the Network causing the slow down.

Think of it like a highway. The highway is the network and your house is you local harddrive and your car is the model. It's faster and easier to work on your car at home then it is on the highway.

I hope that helps, Scott Baugh, CSWP :)

Well, it is true that even in microsoft networks we face the same problem. The ratio is 8:1 decrease in speed. May be you can try this. In options you set the referenced file to be opened for read-only. Speed will slightly improve to 4:1. As suggested by SBaugh it is better to make a local copy and work on it.

You you say about copying files down to the Local hard drive would be nice... But we are talking about 12-15 GB of Data and a Engineeering team of 12 others who need access to possible the same data/links.... Thanks anyway....

I think you are misunderstanding us. We don't mean copy the entire amount of data to your Local Drive. Just copy the file or the few multiple files you plan to work on, not the entire servers drive. That would be just crazy to do that.

This brings up a new Question for you. How big are the file or files you plan to working on?

You can't tell me that the file or files you plan to work on is 12-15 GB of large. I have worked on some very big files while using SW, and I have never had anything over 100 MB. As far as I can remember.

As for your team to access the same "data/links" you will find that 2 people cannot open the same file without one being Read-Only. Also if someone opens an Assembly and someone else opens a part of that assembly, they will only be able to open the part as a Read-Only. Same thing happens in Drawings as well.
