I am unclear on which options to choose for design of a pier column. The pier column will be between a pier cap and drilled shaft. The length of column is about 26 ft. My understanding is it will be a sway frame in y axis for sure but not 100% clear on x axis (y being the axis parallel to bridge a x being perpendicular to bridge). In addition, I am not clear on the end conditions to choose. End conditions has always caused my problem. Some explanation on end condition of the pier column would be greatly appreciated.

You did not provide a lot of information here. What about bridge deck ? Do the deck girders supported on bearings or monolithic with pier ? Is the pier column single column pier or rigid frame pier composed of columns ?

Pls provide more info. a sketch also would help to get better responds.

@HTURKAK
It is a 9" concrete deck and the girders would be supported on the elastomeric bearing. Please see attached reference for a similar bridge.

I just see your respond. My timezone is ( UTC+7) In your case,

- ALONG Y axis , sway cantilever column ( although the pc girders provide some restrain with friction ) , and free to rotate at the top .The last figure ( free to sway and rotate at the top and fixed at the bottom ). Lef should be around 2.1 *Lo ( for design )

- Along X axis, sway frame but rotation limited due to frame action . The 5th figure ( free to sway but no rotation at the top and fixed at the bottom ). Lef should be around 1.05 *Lo ( for design )
