I have several drawings of plastic parts that call out "Surface Finish to be SPE #4 minimum" or "Surface Finish to be SPE #5 minimum". I believe that this is a 1 through 6 scale but I have not been able to locate the spec. I have been to the SPE web site and contacted several of their members but no luck. I have found an SPE-SPI mold surface finish spec but it has values that range from A-1 to D-3, no #4 or #5.

I think that there is supposed to be a molded plastic piece that shows the SPE #1 - #6 finishes so that you can make a visual assessment but I am not positive about that. Any body know where I can get such a thing?

Actually, the kit for the old spec is no longer available but they do have a cross reference between the old spec and the new spec. That was the key piece of info for me. See this link:

I forget the price for DME's (metal) kit but it was over a hundred dollars. I was able to a plastic one from SPI for $10. It also came with the cross reference between the specs. When I called both SPI and SPE no one could tell me what the old numbers meant even though I was forwarded to about 6 different people.
