Specifying ASME versions on drawings

Hi all,

Just curious what your experience is.

The first note on my drawings tend to always be:

1) Interpret IAW ASME Y14.100-2017 and Interpret Dimensioning and Tolerancing IAW ASME Y14.5-2009

What if I were to leave off the 2017 and 2009 from these standards in the note? Would the drawing always default to the latest ASME standard for Y14.100 and Y14.5?

Do you guys always include the specific year/version of the specs on your drawings?

Thank you

1.3 REFERENCE TO THIS STANDARD
When engineering documentation is based on this
Standard, this fact shall be noted on the documentation
or in a referenced separate document. References to this
Standard shall include the designation of ASME Y14.5-
2018.

It is mandatory to include the version. Not stating the exact version is leading to ambiguity because they are essentially different.

However:

1.4.2 Cross-Reference of Standards
Cross-reference of standards in text with or without a
date following the standard designator shall be interpreted
as follows:
(a) Reference to other ASME Y14 standards in the text
without a date following the standard designator indicates
that the issue of the standard identified in the References
section (Section 2) shall be used to meet the requirement.
(b) Reference to other ASME Y14 standards in the text
with a date following the standard designator indicates
that only that issue of the standard shall be used to
meet the requirement.

ASME Y14.5 Section 2 references ASME Y14.100-2017.

But one must have knowledge and access to the aformentioned standards to figure this out.
It's always easier to state the date of version. Only four numbers.

I have always added the year. Also, not everyone has access to the current spec, or know what it should be. If your dwg calls out 2017, the mfr/vendor/cust/etc has to meet that spec year.
