Specifying Sheet Steel Finish Quality 1

I've lost my PDF copies of some of my ASTM standards during relocation. NOW I'm learning how priceless they were!

Can any of you remind me of the 1B/2B/3B etc surface [quality] finishes for sheet steel fabrications? I've spent more time looking online than Thor Heyerdahl took crossing the Pacific on the Kon Tiki and can't find diddly squat!

Delstar has a Table with grits & R_a values for the different mill finishes. As polished:

The standard ASTM finishes are not all you can choose from. If you want a polished or Brushed look, like a #3 0r #4, consider instead a rolled-on finish. They are less expensive, are much more uniform and greatly increase corrosion resistance. All the major mills produce them.
A 304 with a #4 has the same corrosion resistance as a 201 with a "synthetic" #4 ( i.e.rolled-on), but costs 10 to 15% less. Take that to the boss.
These finishes are used by the major appliance makers and restaurant equipment makers, as well as architectural hardware guys.

Is the 304 with #4 finish lower in cost than 201 with rolled-on/synthetic #4? Or is it the other way around?

304 is generally about 10% more expensive than 201. This depends on nickel cost at the time of melt. #4 finish is about 5% more than synthetic. AK and Allegheny publish prices on line, although they are full prices and don't include the wildly varying discounts different customers get.

In sheet product the 304L and 201 base prices are withing a penny of each other. The surcharges are significantly lower for 201.

Available surface finishes willbe a function of alloy and gage. Not all of the combinations are available.
