I was curious if there are standard design criteria for speed humps? If so, where can they be found? I ask the question because they recently installed speed humps in a neighborhood adjacent to ours, and I am convinced that they were constructed with too much of a peak. They are clearly more 'severe' than other traffic calming areas around town. I would estimate (without measuring) that some of them are 5 to 6 inches tall, which seems excessive. I literally cannot go faster than about 10 mph over some of them.

The FHWA document [/i]Traffic Calming: State of the Practice[/i], FHWA-RD-99-135, gives standards for traffic calming devices such as speed humps. I perused it briefly before writing my response, and it looks like speed humps shouldn’t get any taller than 4”. Hope this helps.
