Hi everybody,

I have been working on water hammer and I have question about spikes of surge pressure. For the same pipe system with the same fluid for the same period of the time what will increase the number of spikes of surge pressure when I simulate the water hammer in aft impulse with closing a valve in one second.

Your question isn't very clear. In a liquid-filled system, pressure pulses/spikes occur whenever there is a change in the system such as a downstream valve position changing or an off-line pump being started. Surge pressure analyses are focused on sudden restriction in the downstream system (usually the closure of valves). All other pressure pulses/spikes are simply pressure "noise" that is inherently present in all liquid-filled (incompressible) flow systems.

I also find you question unclear, but "number of spikes" would be dependant on wether the surge can reflect in the "opposite end" or not. E.g. if you have a check valve that is closed then the surge will reflect and travel forth and back between the two ends of the pipeline. In most simulations it will only decay slowly, i think that in real life it will go faster due to losses that the simulation does not account for.

Yes you are right. My question was very unclear and I'm sorry. It was because I was rushing. Userguide helped me to get what I want. Thank you very much and one more time sorry for unclear question
