Hi...

I am starting to work using R.O. Spiral membranes, I would like to understand when manufacturer provide information as 80 mil, 43 mil...what is exactly part of the membrane use to have this kind of measurement?
If I am intending to calculate filtration area have I to consider this number?
Please, feel free to comments and advise....

Thanks in advance,

Araujo

The polyamide thin film composite membrane consists of four layers:

1. crosslinked polyamide semipermeable thin film;
2. polyamide intermediate transport layer (colloidal gel);
3. porous polysulfone support membrane;
4. reinforcing fabric (woven or nonwoven).

The porous support membrane (#3) is the thickest layer by far and seems consistent with the thicknesses you've mentioned above. This is merely my own educated guess. I would contact Dow Chemical or one of the membrane manufacturers for a definitve answer.
