Splice in wood beam 1

I have 18 feet span and available length for wood beam is 16 feet . design says 2x12 @ 16"c/c. How to splice these to get 18 feet span

What part of the country are you in? 18' and 20' 2x12 are readily available in the midwest.
 
you will have to go to a real lumber yard, they don't stock the big ones at Home Depot
 
I would use an engineered wood section, like a parallam.
 
Try doing a flitch plate splice with plate or channels with maybe lag or through bolts. I would just do the splice maybe four to five feet long.

Look at buying the engineered wood beams. They may be cheaper. Defintely easier to use. Labor cost should be also figured in before you make a final decision.
