I'm trying to figure out How I can identify a spline so that I can have it copied the spline is from an 1986 Mercedes Benz 560SL rear axle shaft. It is most likely a DIN metric spec but I wouldn't know how to measure it accurately. I need to have shorter axle shafts made so I will need the specification of the spline so the machine shop can make it.

Splines are measured by go/nogo gages, at least the Ansi ones are. If you know of a shop that makes metric splines, they could probably identify it that way.

Not only is that Merc axle spline a metric DIN spline, but it also is likely a 45 deg pressure angle spline. Most production external splines are roll formed (as opposed to shaped) to reduce cost. So a 45 deg pressure angle is used to make roll forming possible.
