I did it no problem. However, mine was just a random split in any old place, since I didn't know what you tried.
 
Think I have sorted it or at least got something I can use.. also for some strange reason it wouldn't knit back together with the knit tool, only way I found was to delete a simple face then fill back in and form a solid that way.
