Spreadsheet edit Error: "Multiple Assembly Structures"

NX6.0.3 MP3, WinXP x64

Sometimes, upon attempting to edit the embedded Excel Spreadsheet in a part, we see this error:

Error
Multiple Assembly Structures are loaded.
Only one at a time is allowed.

Could anyone help explain why this is happening? It doesn't happen all the time, but does seem related to WAVE interpart links; I can explain more if necessary.
