Spring Support Lock

Good Day!

I just want to ask regarding the spring support condition during revamp/recondition of a pipeline. Does the existing spring support needs to be locked again before doing the changes in the pipeline specially if the spring support is near the pump? This is for the purpose of avoiding the misalignment between pipeline and pump nozzle.

Depends on pipe configuration. Need to remember that you are working in cold condition vs. hot condition of normal operation. Depending on pipe flexibility I would gag spring support if its in close proximity to the pump. You don't want the pipe to spring and have to pull it back into place.

Like mentioned it depends on the pipe routing. If any modifications are far removed from the location of the spring can then I'd imagine it having minimal effect either way. The simplest scenario to imagine where chocking the spring can would be required is if you're cutting the line. If you remove load from the can it'll be oversized and push the line upwards. To "fix" this you'd either have to make the fit up to the new pipe location or force the pipe/can back down. Both of these options probably preferred, could adjust/tweak the spring can settings some, also not recommended/needed.

The above scenario probably doesn't apply much considering this is pipeline and pumping station related but the logic still stands. Chocking is probably recommended especially if this is a liquid line that you're about to deinventory. Ask yourself the question "If I do this work and don't chock it, what happens?"

change or somehow affect the alignment of the pump, you should first disconnect the pipe and leave the pump entirely alone.

Reanalyze the pipe thermals with the new configuration and make appropriate adjustments to your can and reconnect, minding that you do not change the pump alignment. Never the less check the pump alignment after reconnection and adjust as necessary.
