Yes.....based on NFPA & the Life Safety Code, the answer for nearly all shipping/receiving areas of a warehouse building is YES.

The only exception I can think of is a non-combustible building with non-combustible product (i.e. granite warehouse, steel pipe warehouse, steel beam warehouse, etc.). The sprinkler protection would only be allowed to be omitted in these instances if the product is not stored on idle pallets or in wooden crates.

Obviously, the best place to find out for sure would be to do a little research using the standards adopted into law for your region of the country/world (actually region which the warehouse is located).

is the rest of the building sprinkled??????????

Yes, the rest of the building is sprinklered.

I have searched Ontario building code ( Warehouse is in Ontario, Canada) but didn't find anything.

I would tell you per nfpa 13 sprinklers through out.

Now some places allow a two hour fire wall to split buildings so they do not have to sprinkle

so you are saying that there is a partial sprinkler system in the building???

roughly how old is the building??? was this area and addititon to an existing building????

Why compromise the rest of the building by not providing fire protection for the loading dock? In the US, our automatic sprinkler requirements are generally based on the fire area of the building. Once the area is exceeded, the entire building is protected unless it is separated by a fire barrier as indicated by CDA.

Sorry for delay, I was away. Thanks for all your responses. I think our client was looking for a way to save money if it is not addressed in the code. You are right the entire building has to be sprinklered.

Thanks
