Hi Everyone,

I was proposed a weld type that I am not familiar. The condition is for a welded column splice plate. The splice plate width is equal to the width of the column flange. The weld type is called out as a square groove weld along the seam of the splice plate and the column flange. Is this weld considered a CJP or a PJP? What are the limitations of this weld? If possible please provide sections from AISC.

Thanks,

rzoppa

Joint configuration is incomprehensible, at least to me. How's about a sketch?

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

"We're all gunna die."

I was under the impression that there is supposed to be a step to accept a fillet weld that joins the splice plate to the column flange.

The amount of joint penetration using a parallel joint with an edge weld is rather limited to say the least. Unless the base metal is relatively thin, the minimum weld sizes per AWS D1.1 or AISC are unlikely to be met.

Best regards - Al
