Hello!

I have a problem dealing with what material to choose as written in the title

I need to urgently purchase materials for full welding stiffener ring on the pipe, while pipe material is SS316Ti.

to reduce delivery impact, I want to change the material of stiffener ring to SS304 or SS316 if possible.

It's the vacuum effluent lead by ejector on vacuum tower and the DP is -970.0 mbarg at 405'C. maximum design temp. is 435'C

is there problem using SS316? I'm expecting to use SS304 as the fluid doesn't contact the pipe, so no pitting corrosion is anticipated for the stiffener ring, I suppose.

any advice will be grateful. thank you.

@metengr Thank you very much! If you could give further help, can I learn what code/practice it is stated?

I would refer you to ASME B31.3 piping code for design rules and material allowable stress values.

Do you know why 316Ti was selected for the pipe?

How will this be fabricated to the pipe? Will these be welded on? Will an post heat treatment be carried out?

I would urge you to use 316L. It should be just as available and is often dual certified with 316 but do check.

Also consider your filler metal - I would suggest ER318 for compatibility with the 316Ti.

The OD applied stiffener rings could also be made with 304.

Thank you for your advice and suggestion!

as Weldstan said, It's decided to use 304L with E318.

Thank you
