I was wondering if anyone knows of a standard or would be willing to share a standard regarding scratches in sheetmetal.

During the fabrication of sheetmetal parts in a punch press, press braking, and handling. Parts get scratched. In some locations on our product this is unacceptable. We are trying to find a method to determine what is acceptable and what is not.

I was wondering if there are any standards like ANSI, ASTM, or others that would help define this.I've heard of "Type A Surfaces" before but I don't know what they refer to.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is a stainless steel surface roughness spec which may be applicable ASTM A480.

We've used it on large stainless steel panels that form the enclosure of some of our tools to control scratches etc. I think we call out something like No. 4 FINISH UNIDIRECTIONAL or some such, I can't find an example right now.

I've had vendors want us to call this spec up on aluminum too which isn't really correct. I've never found the aluminum equivalent.
