Hello ..

I am a researcher working on buried pipelines detection using ground penetrating radar. In order to improve the performance of the radar, it will be very helpful to know the usual practice that is followed when burying parallel pipelines.

Are they usually buried beside each other horizontally or vertically?
For a given pipeline diameter, what is the usual distance between two adjacent pipes?

Are there some standards or guidelines you recommend me to look for?

I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you very much

The practice varies widely. Minimum separation can be as low as 50mm. You would though tend to find min separation being equal to the larger of the pipe diameters. All depends on how much space you have and how many pipes.

Often companies will have their own standard and normal practice.

Nearly always at the same level, but utility pipes in streets can be stacked vertically.

Separation is usually edge to edge in a vertical sense.

Thank you very much LittleInch, I appreciate your response.

That is what I figured, it seems that every company has its own standards.

Is it possible to mention some of the major companies names? I will try to contact them and see if they will provide more information.

In particular, companies that bury their pipes in sand and soil because that is the main application of the radar we are working on.

The big oil companies like BP, shell, ExxonMobil, total, Aramco etc plus any big utility or pipeline transmission company, especially in the US. Too many to name

Not many will Bury pipes in anything other than soil or sand.

1D separation is pretty common in my experience as a minimum.
