For many years we used shear wave (SW) and time of flight diffraction (TOFD) UT as the primary method to inspect steam pipe welds at our steam plants (along with wet mag for surface inspection). We also used phased array UT (PAUT) in some cases where further classification is needed on an indication found using SW & TOFD. Our new NDE contractor is stating that PAUT is now the power industry standard. I haven't been able to find any reports or studies to verify that. Any comments would be appreciated.

Hey I think you have the wrong group for this question. This is about Solidworks CAD design software, but I was intrigued since once a welder, always a welder!

I did find a document here: I don't know if that will help you with all you need or not. Its amazing though how far NDT has come since I have been in the trenches of welding and fabrication!

Jon
