Hey guys,

(STEEL) Does anyone know any requirements for minimum edge distances for holes in the non-loaded direction? I can't find anything concrete on this, not sure if it exists or not.

Thanks in advance!

Our code (not AISC) uses 1.25 x (hole dia) for machine cut metal, or 1.4 x (hole dia) for hand flame cut, in the non-loaded direction, so presumably yours will be similar?

AISC section J3.4: Min edge distance:
" The distance from the center of a standard hole to an edge of connected part in any direction shall not be less than either the applicable value from table J3.4 or table J3.4M, or as required in section J3.10...."

Is it bad that my first tendency was to respond with a wise crack / pun about how he couldn't find anything "concrete" about this?

ok i see it now, thanks for the info. does anyone have this info for cold formed material? the explanation in appendix a section E3.1 of AISI seems to only apply when the load is parallel to the edge being considered (aka the loaded direction)? im really just looking for some reinforcement on what the AISI standard is trying to say.

thanks!
