Dealing with an historical bridge where I’m reusing the steel arch girders (6 of them) and rebuilding the rest of the bridge entirely. The steel arch girder will be attached to the stem via concrete corbel. I’m wondering if there is a typical type of abutment that is used for this situation. Counterfort was proposed but I’m reluctant to use because of the prohibitive cost of labor and forming. Are there any special considerations that I should take when considering the thrust from the arch? From the top of footing to top of roadway is about 27'. Thanks.
