Does anyone know where I can find information about local or semi-local steel plants that would offer tours? I am assuming some of the larger operations would offer tours, I just don't know who. If anyone can recommend someone in the Southeast, I would appreciate it.

I would just call a local steel fabricator. I'm in Tennessee, and in my experience, they are usually receptive to providing half-day tours of their shop. I would think they'd welcome the opportunity to develop a relationship with a structural engineering firm. It's a good way to promote the steel industry, and it's good networking. We've taken tours of local fabricator shops, and we also took a company field trip to the Nucor-Yamoto steel mill in Arkansas, which was one of the best experiences in my young career. Our guide at Nucor said they welcome engineers, architects, fabricators, or anyone in the industry to tour their mill. Local fabricators should do the same.

I'm in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and would be willing to drive a few hours if necessary.
