steel lintel bolted to structure?

Having double garage doors converted to one wide door on a house with brick veneer. Mason wants to use 1/2 inch thick angle lag-bolted to structure for new 16' wide lintel. Is there a problem with bolting the lintel to the wood structure of the house?

Yes, but not with the angle.

If the garage doors have beaqms over them and they are discontinuos at the existing center support column, then a new beam needs to be installed to soan the full 16 feet.

If not and the existing beam is continuous over the existing column, it needs to be checked for the 16 foot span, If it does not work, it needs to either be replaced or stiffened.

I would STRONGLY suggest that you hire a local structural engineer here,

There is the issue with the lintel for the brick veneer, and another structural issue with the header for the garage doors. The contractor will add a laminated beam to reinforce the existing header in the wood frame garage structure, which supports the roof. It is the 16' span of brick veneer that I am concerned about. There are two 8' lintels now which have to be reworked to a 16' lintel. I thought brick lintels are supposed to be "free" i.e. not attached to the wood structure behind the veneer.
