Hello,

Is there a standard spec for the max. torque required to steer a vehicle. Obviously it is desirable to keep the steering effort to a minimum, but is there a generally accepted design rule?. I am mainly interested in 'All terrain vehicles' but info for any vehicles would be appreciated.

Thanks

No, what you've said is wrong. There /is/ a minimum desirable torque, related to steering feel.

As to a maximum, well, I rather think that is limited to the strength of your customer, and the expected usage.

FWIW a healthy adult male will probably be happy at several Newton metres, spiking to perhaps 15 Nm. I doubt anyone would be happy with spikes of say 60 Nm.

I suggest you measure typical vehicles in the condition you are worried about.

Hey EmZed,

In all the material that I have read and some of the experimental studies that we have conducted in the past, 9-10 Nm seems to be the high-end limit (also taking into account the comfort level of the driver). The present generation ps vehicles may require you to put in 4-6 Nm of steering torque during everyday driving.

P.S. This data is for small and mid sized passenger vehicles.

Uday M.
