Hi,

I'm designing a horizontal vessel acc. to ASME VIII Div.1. This vessel has 2 cylindrical shells circunferentially welded, each of those length 1,5m (total 3m).
At the left and right ends of this vessel there are 2 reduction cones from plate and then WN flanges welded to them with their blind.
Material: 316, MDMT 0°C, design pressure 7,5 bar, O.D. 508mm
This vessel is supported by 2 saddles (1 sliding + 1 fixed) with wear plates. The 2 saddles are at the same distance from the end of the 2 shells/cones and they are "symmetric".
Now, I'm trying to design the saddles acc. to ASME VIII Div.2, but I don't understand what "Stiffened Vessel Length" is. It's a parameter required by my calculation software and it corresponds to symbol "L" in nomenclature list, par. 4.15.6 of Div.2. In this case what length do I have to use? The total length of vessel, including cones+WN? Or only from W.L. to W.L. of cylindrical shells themselves?

Thank you

What is the name of the software being used?

L: length of the cylindrical shell measured from tangent line to tangent line for a vessel with
dished heads or from the inner face to inner face for vessels with flat covers or tubesheets.
For you this should be the length between the cone to shell intersections or between the tangent lines if you have knuckles

mmm so is it 3m? (no knuckles in my case)

Call the suppport group of the software company. In most cases they can answer your questions.
