Hi fellow Engineers,

I have some difficulty in calculating the MAWP & MAWV of low pressure Storage Tanks. I had spent long hours on the Pressure Vessel Handbook and I'm still not sure about the relevance of my calculations. I have almost a hundred low pressure storage tanks, some with conical and dome roofs, to determine the MAWP/V for one of our major clients before sizing pressure relief devices for those tanks. Please advise.

Frustrated engineer,
Kevin

kevllt,
It's difficult to be definitive with such sketchy information. Are these existing or yet to be built tanks? If existing then the tank nameplates should provide design conditions.

Your use of the Pressure Vessel Handbook suggests that these are ASME tanks?

Most low pressure storage tanks that I have seen are designed and built to either API Std 650 or API Std 620. API650 includes a method to calculate Design Pressure for an existing tank, but this code only allows design pressures up to 2.5psig. API620 allows up to 15psig, but calculation is more rigorous. With such codes the design conditions are set initially, but one usually doesn't then calculate a MAWP as is done with the ASME BPVC. So maybe I am barking up the wrong tree and you do actually have ASME tanks, in which case you would use ASME VIII to check the MAWP for the different elements.

Cheers,
John

Sorry fellas,

I wasn't aware that the postings are inter-related? I thought that the postings were meant for different group of engineers, ie. Chemical, mechanical, or structural and I just needed a feedback from different disciplines. Thanks for making me aware of it. At least now I know there's no point posting the threads in different forums.

By the way, my tanks are basically Low Pressure API 650 Tanks.
