Hi, does any one can tell me which is the best way in order to join two "I beams" by welding. I have heard that I could use a CJP weld in a straight cut or a CJP weld in a "Z" cut, which of these is the best?

Where can I find a book, web page, article, etc., that deals with this subject?

I think my English is not very good, so I´m including the following image

Thanks in advance

I believe the straight cut would be the easiest to prepare and weld.

I have concerns fo the Z-cut due to the sharp corners that would be encountered and the difficulty in having the cuts align just so, little room for error.

Good luck - Al

I agree with gtaw. The presence of any sharp corner in a weld region is going to increase susceptibility to fatigue crack initiation and propagation.

I would use a straight cut with a Structural Purpose Complete Penetration Butt weld using an electrode matched to the steel, usually fu=480MPa for steel up to fy=300MPa.

You have shown the symbol for a double V butt weld but I would leave that up to the fabricator, so long as he uses a prequalified weld.

This would be for Australia.
