Hi, I am a mechanical engineer struggling in the control world. I need to control an electronic torque limiter from measuring a strain gauge, do I need to programme a PLC (please no!), or are there easier ways?? any help appreciated, gareth

Strain gages usually require a module that supplies an excitation signal to the bridge. Talk to the controls salesperson on that point.
Most of these modules will offer an output of 4 to 20 mA, digital, etc.
You may not have to do any programming.

Transducer Techniques ( has signal conditioners, this may allow direct connection to your torque limiter. You will need to know what type of signal the control is looking for and what the load cell puts out in order to specify a signal conditioner.
