Hi,

I have used strand 7 to model the deflection of a beam when under a point load. However I am trying to see the effect of the deflection when under different ground settlement conditions. I aim to utilise springs when modelling the ground. How can we go about doing this?

Hi Chris2448

The easiest is to use the face support function in the attributes menu. If you look in the help file they give some general guidance with regards to the various support stiffness's.

If you really want to be fancy I would suggest modelling your soil as brick elements and then modelling your beam as shell or brick elements, apply contact between the relevant surfaces, and then solve using your choice of either the non-linear or non-linear transient dynamic solver. This method would probably give the most accurate results based on your soil profile, however you would need a decent amount of information with regards to the soil.
