Are you possibly referring to a cantilever foundation. In cantilever foundation design two separate footings are interconnected by a reinforced concrete beam that is very stiff AND IS NOT SUPPORTED BY THE UNDERLYING SOIL! The purpose of the design is to force the soil reaction to be concentrated at a specific point. If you have a copy of either Urquahart and O'Rourke's Design of Concrete Structures or Elwyn E. Seelye's Data Book for Civil Engineers - Design, they give an example of such a design. Instead of bearing directly on soil as their examples do, it could be used to tie together pile caps. Just a thought - perhaps you could give some more detailed description of what your design entails.
