Hello evryone,

I have a case where I need to analyze the 'mode-shape' of an old platform that has given lots of structural failures when some of the main rotating equipment were online. The way I will go about it is to model the entire platform using FEA methods. I will also perform vibration measurement that will acquire simultaneously 24-48 channels to identify areas of high vibration as well as ODS at different operating condition. My aim is to identify the 'weakest-structure' within the platform. What other approaches would you recommend?

Thanks

Ruff

hello

it depends on the code you are using and how much time willing to spend how large is the platform itself, is it fixed or moored, I believe you are looking for explicit nonlinear dynamic type of analysis, codes such as Abaques, LSDYNA3D, and probably Ansys are the codes you need to explore, may be other less known codes are available as well, usually industry owned, their authors are decline to give any details and strictly keep them for their commercial benefits. you probably need to concentrate on fatigue failure, therefore locking to simulate the number of cycles enough to generate stress close to or exceeding failure stress throughout the age of the platform.
hope this will help

You should be using offshore structural analysis software such as SACS, SESAM or Zentech StruCAD.

Modelling the jacket would be too complicated, you could start with a localised skid or a deck analysis.
