Hi lads,

I was wondering why sometimes do we need to have a beam with splice connection to a welded short beam stub? Why the beam is not connected to the column directly? Why do we need a short stub beam?

One reason for this is that, sometimes, it's an easier way to make a moment connection in the field. Welds to the column and bolts for the splicing.

Having a welded beam moment connection to the column vs a bolted end plate avoids dealing with the bending in the column flange from resisting/transferring the bolt forces. Often if going down the bolted moment end plate route, you'll need a heavier flanged section because of the different load path involved.
