Hi:

Concrete slab (thick) on metal deck (formwork only) with steel beams below. No composite action required. The steel beam ( a few feet long) below just hang from the deck for piping support.
The studs are actually used to attached the beam to the slab. The stud are specified as 14" long based on the ACI embedment check. Is this too long for typical stud? I wonder if this length stud are practical?

Sounds a lot like an anchor bolt (A.B.) tension and embedment length problem to me. ACI Appendix D and all that good stuff.
 
Yes. The calculation is based on Appendix D. The question is if 14" long stud is practical to use? Do they make that long stud?

Any thought?
 
I don't know of anyone who makes a 14" stud. Why is your concrete slab over 14" thick? That's a very thick slab for elevated applications.

I think you need to recalculate.
 
For Nelson S3L the max length is 8", but you can weld one stud to the other's end and make it longer.

Going back to Ron's question, I think we need to get to the bottom of why a 14" long stud is needed? What is this pipe carrying and what size is it?
