For a custom project I am doing, I would like to use a Subaru motor and transaxle setup from a GDA-GR ('00-'08) Impreza. These engines and gearboxes come in many different flavours, but at this stage I am undecided exaxtly which one I will use.

It is rather impractical for me to go and purchase the components and measure/draw them up myself, so am asking:

Does anyone out there has access to the EJ20 Motor and gearbox models in 3D CAD?

Any sugestions would be much appreciated.

Can't help you for the most part, but-
is a very active community of 60,000 centered around the Impreza. I'd also try tossing it out there. Not that the average car owner has CAD models but there are quite a few vendors that make parts for them and a few should have the files you're looking for. Getting them may be difficult though. Also, the motor is popular in experimental airplane circles. Maybe that community could help you. If you care to measure a WRX 5 speed trans I've got one in the garage if you'd like to spend some time with it we could maybe work something out. If in Detroit. -Mark

Thanks very much Mark, I appreciate your recommendations. I am living central London (UK) at the moment, hence it being a little difficult to purchase/store/access motor and transmission components J

For the most part, people seem to do the vehicle modifications ‘as they go’, which unfortunately is not much help to me. I am secretly hoping someone will have the actual CAD casting models (just outside surfaces even) so I can plan their positioning in the vehicle accurately. I will post on the NASIOC forum and see what sort of response I receive.

Another option may be to cheekily ask you to do a couple of quick measures of the box you have in your garage. I dont think the 6 speed is geometrically different in the critical positions of shaft to shaft centres etc.

Thanks again

The 6 speed is huge when compared side by side with the 5 speed. a bit longer, significantly wider in the mid section. It is seriously beefy. I can't lift it. I can easily lift the 5MT. I have pis of them side by side if you want. The engine mating face and shaft are in the same place as are the axle shafts, although the clutching and axle shafte are mostly non-interchangeable. The rear drive shaft connection is the same but the shaft is a different length.

The pictures of the transmissions side by side would be great thanks.

If it helps, the 6 speed is about 25kgs more than a 5 speed and is substantially stronger. The 6 speed is also available with or without DCCD (Driver Controlled Centre Diff). The MY05 version was an open centre diff with 35%F/65%R torque bias and the 06+ were a LSD with 41%F/59%R. The DCCD used an coil to indirectly vary a braking force between the front and rear speed differential up to locked.

Did you find a 3D file on the engine and transmission. I work in AutoCAD Inventor and would like a copy if you had any luck.

Thanks for the trans info. I have been trying for a long time (>6 months) to obtain this sort of data, but so far no one seems to have anything. I have tried NASIOC, and no sensible response there either.

My next step would be to purchase some scanning equipment ( and an actual engine/gearbox. I know this is still a lot of money, but hopefully it could be a service I could do for others as well. They have sent me a sample scan of an engine, and it came out reasonably good.

I work predominately in Autodesk Inventor too (also Catia v5 and Solidworks) but I think NextEngine is only integrated with Solidworks at this stage.

I am also working on a project to build a mid-engine sports car based on the Subaru engine & transmission. I also hunted for months to try to get some technical dimensional info. without success.
I have just bought the front end of an 06 Impreza WRX STI (spec C) + 6 spd box.(exported from Japan) and am in the process of pulling it apart in my garage. I have sarted measuring and compiling drawings so that I can design a chassis to fit.
(not finished yet) I will be happy to share these albiet without many of the details. I'm also planning to re-locate the alternator / AC compressor & discard the power steering pump. The turbo also needs to be relocated to a more appropriate spot.
The 6 speed box is not only heavier & stronger, it also has an oil pump instead of the splash-lube in the 5 speed. This means you can also fit a gear-oil cooler easily (mine has one factory fitted)

Has anyone used the Subaru as a mid engine? I need to find a way to lock the drive through the front diff. Seems like it should be possible to make a gear with stepped spline gears to fit over the (outer) main shaft & (inner) front diff pinion shaft? This gear also drives the 6 spd box oil pump.

Thanks for the lead on Bremar.
I emailed them & they have responded with the sad news that they do not have a conversion kit for the 6 speed box. Enough requests & apparently they will develop one.
I now need to find a company that can make me a locking spool that fits both the inner & outer drive shafts + drive the oil pump.

Design By Design,
how can I get a copy of your 3d info of the Subaru parts?

I have used SLA from a STL built from a point cloud

What you have is probably to large as most SLA envelopes are 20"cubed.

Although you could get a glove mold made up and cast a replica out of polyurethane.

I have done both and the urethane is relative cheap..I have also bought replica (plastic) engine parts from

Cheers

I don't know anything but the people that do.

Hi,
Im new to this, so please slap me down if i do something wrong. I have an 08 Impreza transaxle - 5 sp and the locking collar w/internal splines from Bremar automation does not work. I thought it would, so i bought it. I just found out Sun, and have been emailing them since with no reply so far. Looks like I may be in the same boat as dzine - or a similar one - specing internal splines and haveing them broached - or worse yet, having broaches made. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My project involves a 3.0 L Subi 6 cyl which will be turbocharged and mated tto the Impreza 5 sp. It's going into a mid engined chassis of my own design.

forgot to tell dzine that if you would like any info on the 2008 WRX 5 sp, i've got one....
