Hi

I'm in the preliminary steps of designing a cooling system for a hydroelectric power plant refurbishment. I'm looking at numerous options in regards to arrangement of the cooling system.

Currently I'm looking into placing a heat exchanger in the tailwater pit of the turbine. A custom designed pipe coil heat exchanger would be viable but rather costly. In light of this I'm looking for manufacturers that can supply off the shelf submersible heat exchangers capable of withstanding this high flow environment.

Any suggestions?

Lube oil cooling / other cooling duties may be critical functions required to be in operation in emergencies - will this tail water pit always have a water level above a low limit even in an emergency ?

Will there be water flowing in this pit during an emergency ? If not, then we have 2 design case duties for this cooler - one for normal operation, and other when water flow in the pit is close to zero (emergency).

Any other cases? Will this pit be above low level limit during initial startup ? All significant operating cases should be tabulated and duties defined, both on lube oil side and on shellside (tailwater). Once you have these done, define process design pressures / temperatures and select materials of construction.
