It can be a freaky feeling. Way back, on one of my earlier Cooper repairs, my brother forgot to secure the bolt that connected the steering column to the rack and pinion steering box. I suddenly found myself unable to stear the vehicle. Fortunately I was not going fast and traffic was light.

I had something similar in a engineering tank thingy... pulled to go Right and after a brief change of direction the hydraulic line went. Did you know that when you slam the brakes on with tracked engineering tankie thing all you see is ground in front of you and you really think the thing is going to flip over.

Fixed the hydraulic line with fence wire and a mess tin and refused to drive it back to Lager.

for Easter Sunday?

Time to change its name to "Forever Stuck".

A black swan to a turkey is a white swan to the butcher ... and to Boeing.

> Could rename it "Ever Grounded" which has a couple of meanings, open to interpretation

Haha, yeah like Frank Costanza's reaction after finding out George had sex in Frank and Estelle's bed while they were out of town.

The Ever Forward event didn't make a big splash in the news because thankfully it didn't block other shipping traffic this time.
Whether it would have even made the news at all if it weren't named Ever-something, I'm not sure.

There's some old statistics in looks like roughly two per year

says roughly 50 ships lost per year in the last couple of years

Thanks, IRS... didn't know there were 4 a month... surprised that happens these days.

I get the impression that there are still lots of collisions, since the highest loss rate is in the South China Sea, which is pretty crowded, and it might just be that the collisions result in too much damage to be economically repaired and the ship is declared a loss.

Well we had at least two since december.

The 4th of December.

The 177 meter long ship Almirante Storni is loaded with timber and sails under the Liberian flag.
It was on its way from Ljusne in Söderhamn to Gothenburg and was at anchor outside Vinga when the fire broke out.
December 11th
- It can take days, up to a few weeks before the fire is completely extinguished, says IdaMaria Stocks.
Assisted by three tugboats, the Coast Guard's two large vessels Poseidon and Triton and the two Norwegian vessels that were on site during the week, the Liberia-flagged vessel was piloted into berth 615 in Skandiahamnen.

On 13 December at around 03.30, the British ship Scot Carrier collided with the Danish ship Karin Høj between Skåne and Bornholm.

Two Danish crew members died when the British ship drove right into them.

A preliminary investigation is underway into gross negligence in maritime traffic, manslaughter, causing of another's death and severe sea drunkenness.
Two suspects - a British citizen and a Croatian citizen - have been detained.

https://www.agcs.allianz.com/news-and-insights/reports/shipping-safety.html[/URL]]Foundered (sunk/submerged) was the main cause of total losses during 2020, accounting for one in two. Contributing factors include bad weather, poor visibility leading to contact, flooding and water ingress and machinery breakdown. The number of fires/explosions resulting in total losses of vessels increased again year‑on‑year, hitting a four‑year high of 10.
[ul]
[li]Collectively, foundered (sunk/submerged) (54%),[/li]
[li]wrecked/stranded (20%) and[/li]
[li]fire/explosion (11%)[/li]
[/ul]
are the top three causes of total losses over the past decade, accounting for 85%

I added the bullets to make the incident types more obvious. This 85% of the total ship losses are loss types that are very likely to result in scrapping the vessel or salvage costs exceeding the value of the vessel.

Is battle ships like Moscow included?

From this thread and links. My news feed seems to think quite rightly I have an interest in marine things.

It's quite surprising how many incidents they do have globally extremely regularly. But most of it is not picked in mainstream media up as it's offshore or in none holiday destinations.

I think boats are way harder than aircraft. Used to enjoy sailing but was never very good at it.

Dunno why... two degrees of freedom as opposed to three. It wasn't until that Ever whatever grounding that I became aware of 'shore effects'. Once it was pointed out, I knew what they were, but had never thought of it as a problem.

I just found a very good satellite photograph of the pulling operation on
